Tizian (1487 - 1576) - Venetian painter, born in Pieve di Cadore in Friuli. Together with Michelangelo, Rafael and Leonardo da Vinci, Titian is the greatest representative of Italian Renaissance. From April 1511 he was engaged on the execution of the frescoes in the "Scuola del Santo" in Padua, and in 1516 commissioned as Painter of the Republic to execute a battle scene for the grand council chamber of the Doge's Palace. In 1529/30 in Bologna, Titian first encountered Charles V, who granted him the position of court painter, at the same time raising him to the rank of a palsgrave and installing him as a Knight of the Golden Spur. From 1553 until the end of his life he was granted repeated commissions by Philip II, and these were accompanied by a regular correspondence. He painted not only biblical and mythological subjects but portraits too. He is considered as the greatest portrait master of the XVI century. The writer Dolce said about his creative work: Titian is the only painter compared with the nature: his characters live, move and their flash tremble. Titian died of the plague in Venice in 1576
