Svetoslav Roerich (1904–1993) — a Russian painter. At the age of twelve, Svetoslav already helped his distinguished father, Nicholas Roerich, to stretch canvases on frames and to prepare paints. In 1919 in England, he took a special course in architecture. In 1920, he entered the Architectural Faculty of Columbia University. In 1926, he achieved great success having won the Grand Prix at the exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Philadelphia. Art critics said that the talent of Svetoslav Roerich had flowered all at once. Living in India for many years he penetrated into the spirit of the great Indian people. That is why, on the background of the modern world art Svetoslav Roerich is still an original and bright painter. He was an Honorary Academician of the Art Academy of the USSR, an honorary member of the Bulgarian Academy of Art, and the laureate of the International Award of Jawaharlal Nehru. In India, he was given the highest award of the country — “Padsha-Bhushan.”
