“Mankind is on historical crossroads ” is the main subject of the picture, where the people are introduced on a boundary of epoch - heathenism and christianity, there is a spiritual revolution. Gogol wrote, that great creation, such as “ the Phenomenon of Christ ”, grows, educates, creates the artist: for years of activity his talent, nature become deeper, is more significant - it needs to mount up to the intention, moral and conceptually. The work of this picture became a synonym of creative activity of the artist. He informs his plan in the letter to his father: « I would like to be understood my thoughts without stories. I shall present Ioann with a cross, that everyone suddenly understood, that it is Ioann... The scholars are behind him which were the scholars of Christ..... I presented Sant Ioann near young Ioann of the apostle and Evangelist, and further Andrey, Petrov’s brother; I shall try to give types which were struck out Leonard da Vinchi in «The secret’s night » … On this party of a picture there is in water a grandfather with the grandsons; further young man concurrent in water, looked back to a loud voice, scandalous in desert... » Then artist enumerates figures one for another. In this listing still miss the richman and slave, exhausted by the captivity. The composition of a picture is excellently balanced and detected. Here Ivanov followed to own aiming. A figure of the Christ, he isolated, put separately from the remaining participants of event. In 1858, when finally all means to life were depleted, the artist decided to return in St. Petersburg there to sell a picture, on the obtained money to come true, for a long time conceived, travel on East and then finally to live in Moscow, which one, as thought Ivanov, early or late again should become center of Russian life. But his dream could not come true. The picture is main business of his life was met cool and, was not estimated, there was no also hint on its acquisition. He has lived in St. Petersburg for only six weeks. In some hours after his mors the footman from court office has brought a package: king for the low-budget price has decided to buy “ the Phenomenon of Christ to the people ”.
