In the register book of his works Vallotton called the picture “A half-length portrait of a topless woman in a black shawl and in a black hat with a pink ribbon”. The artist studied thoroughly the heritage of Old Masters. Studying at Julian’s Academy he chose the patterns of the highest art for copying, which was compulsory in the process of learning – the canvases by Leonardo da Vinci, Antonello da Messina, Albrecht Durer. This canvas attracting by the solemnity of its colouring was performed by the artist with amazing carefulness.
