Karl Bryullov (1799-1852) is a Russian painter, foreman of a portrait genre.
Karl Bryullov's first teacher of painting was his father, sculptor - ornamentalist. In 1809-1822 Brullov attended the St. Petersburg Academy of Applied Arts. A.I. Ivanov and A.E. Egorov were his teachers. In 1823-1835 he worked in Italy, where he wrote a number of cheerful harmonious works destroying strict academic canons of beauty. The best-known picture of this period is called “The Italian Midday” (1827). In this work the artist has achieved naturalness in the image of a naked body and illumination effects.
Later Bryullov proved to be the brilliant foreman of a portrait genre while paining the Isaac Cathedral. The main Bryullov's work is “The Last Days of Pompeii”.
Brullov was very gifted and independent. He has revived the Academy to life. His workshop could not hold all those who wished him to be their teacher.
